Glenys and Shayne Eaton’s heritage property was originally built over 100 years ago. Nestled on the Devonport Road hillside the property has un-interrupted views out over the harbour and access to the waters edge. This home won the 2021 National Category Award for renovation at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. It also won the the Regional Lifestyle Award for Interiors.
Having lived in the home since 2015 the couple planned to renovate. “The original house while large had very little space we could socialise in. We wanted space for family and friends to be together” says Glenys.
The couple had used Calley Homes for other works over the years including commercial work so when they decided to renovate the heritage property they turned to Johnny to take care of things.
“We trust Johnny’s judgement. He is relentless when it comes to the finish and he has a very good eye for detail” says Glenys. “Johnny engaged and architectural designer to do the design for the extension. Our objective was to maximise the views and the indoor/outdoor flow. We wanted the renovation to be sympathetic to the age of the property too”.
The result is a stunning addition to the home where sunsets and sunrises can be enjoyed and family and friends can come together. The extension features an open plan kitchen, scullery, dining and casual seating area with access to two outdoor areas. The first a decking which leads off the dining space and provides seamless uninterrupted views out over the harbour. The other a sheltered outdoor area which is set into the hillside and leads off the kitchen.
The extension features parquet timber flooring and a kitchen which is heritage in style and colour but has all the modern functionality you could possibly want. The kitchen centres the new space and feature lighting brings a sense of drama and wow. Even the window details were thought about to ensure the modern architectural window suite fitted with the existing windows which are over 100 years old.
“Renovations are never easy but the thing with Johnny and the Calley Homes team is: any problem, isn’t a problem. It’s dealt with and gone completely”.
